Latakia, most important port town in western Syria, was also known as "Laodicea" or "Laodicea ad Mare". Its strategic position made it an important place during
history, from Roman until Ottoman times. We have been in the city center to digitize the external part of the building, where many roman sculptures as this one are standing under the porch of the facade.

Francesco Vezzoli, The Eternal Kiss, 2015
Roman heads (woman head circa 117-138 A.D.; man head circa 2nd Century A.D.), white Carrara marble, watercolour, black African marble plinth
49 x 35 x 49 cm. Vezzoli explains how “the main objective of ‘Eternal Kiss’ is to use the process of aesthetic restoration to reenact a fictional kiss from two thousand years ago.” ‘Eternal Kiss’ has, Vezzoli continues, two main aims: “the first is to restore to the heads the notion that originally they were made to function as objects of desire; the second, and more ambitious, aim of the work is to create the most ancient sculpture of a kiss in existence.” #eternalkiss#istagram#statue#repost#romanart#contemporaryart#picoftheday#marble#beauty#appropriation#history#archeology

This is the reverse of a tiny (16 mm) commemorative coin in the name of Constantine I, issued posthumously by one of his sons, Constantius II, at Antioch between AD 337 and 340. Although Constantine had officially recognized Christianity (it would not become the State religion until decades later), the imagery on this coin is drawn almost entirely from earlier pagan (that is, traditional Roman) religion. The deceased Emperor is shown ascending to the heavens in a four horse chariot. The only concession to Christianity is the hand of God in the upper right, in about the 1:00 o'clock position, waiting to receive him. On the obverse (swipe to see it) Constantine is shown in the traditional veiled and somber pose used on all posthumous coin images since the beginning of the Imperial period over 300 years earlier.

Stone mosaic of Artemis, ca. AD 400-500, eastern Mediterranean.

This mosaic is one of many representations made of a famous statue of Artemis sculpted some 1000 years before! The artist used a variety of colours to reproduce the sense of volume of the original.

Greek gods and figures of classical mythology remained important in Roman art even after Christianity became the official religion of the empire.
